LinkedIn Connection Warm-Up
CRM custom field updated per prospect: warm-up status (engaged on post / connected / replied to follow-up / ready for outbound). Daily log of comments posted and engagement received. Weekly report of warm-up cohort progressing to outbound.
Before you start
- Sales rep's LinkedIn profile optimized (headline, banner, recent activity)
- Approved messaging guidelines for warm-up touches
- Target prospect list with LinkedIn URLs
- Target prospect list with LinkedIn URLs
- Recent prospect activity (posts, comments, shares)
- Sales rep's persona and topic areas
The steps
- Pull recent prospect activity — For each target prospect, scan LinkedIn for: recent posts (last 30 days), comments they wrote, articles they shared, and any reactions to mutual connections. Identify 1-2 posts worth genuinely engaging with — not generic.
- Engage thoughtfully on prospect content — Comment on a recent post with a substantive reply — add a perspective, ask a follow-up question, or share a related data point. Avoid 'great post!' or generic emoji. Limit to 2-3 prospects per day to keep engagement quality high.
- Wait for engagement signal before connecting — If the prospect likes or replies to your comment within 7 days, you have a warm signal — proceed to step 4. If no engagement, repeat step 2 with a different post (max 2 attempts), then either move to a cold connection request or deprioritize.
- Send a personalized connection request — Send a connection request with a 250-character note: reference the post you engaged on, their take, and one sentence on why you'd value the connection. Do not pitch in the connection request — the goal is connection, not conversion.
- Follow up after acceptance — After they accept, wait 2-3 days, then send a follow-up message: thank them for connecting, share a relevant resource (article, podcast, or case study) with no ask attached. Goal is to be useful — the pitch comes later.
- Track engagement and move to outbound when ready — Log engagement quality in CRM: engaged on post, accepted connection, replied to follow-up, asked a question, etc. Once a prospect has at least 2 positive engagements, route to standard outbound sequence with the warm-up history as context.
If it goes wrong
Comments come across as performative or sales-y
Force a quality bar: each comment must add a perspective, data point, or genuine question. If you wouldn't post the comment to a peer, don't post it to a prospect. Peer-review samples weekly.
LinkedIn flags the rep's account for connection-request spam
Cap to 5 personalized connection requests/day, not 20 generic ones. If flagged, pause for 7 days, then resume at 2/day for a recovery period.
Prospect connects but never engages further
Don't force conversion. Stay in their feed by continuing to comment thoughtfully on their posts for 30 days. If no engagement after 30 days, route to email outbound — LinkedIn isn't the right channel for them.
