Paid Ad Creative Brief
Creative brief: objective, KPI, audience, message, formats, visuals, CTA, deadline. Reviewed and assigned to designer/creative team.
Before you start
- Approved campaign objective and budget
- Target audience and persona profile
- Brand voice and visual guidelines
- Campaign objective (awareness, conversion, retargeting)
- Audience segment with size and characteristics
- Performance benchmarks from prior creative
The steps
- State the campaign objective and KPI — Lead with: what's the campaign for, and how will we measure success? Examples: 'Drive demo bookings; KPI = $80 cost-per-booking'. Vague objectives produce vague creative.
- Profile the target audience precisely — Specify: persona, role, company size, industry, pain points, what they search/read. The more specific the audience, the more specific the creative can be. Generic audience = generic ad.
- Define the core message — One sentence: what this audience needs to know. Not a tagline — a positioning. Example: 'Replace your manual SDR follow-up with AI that closes 3x faster'. The brief leads from this sentence.
- Specify creative formats and variants — Per platform: image vs video, ad sizes, character limits. For each, request 3 variants for testing: different angles, different visuals, different CTAs. Single-creative ads can't be optimized.
- Provide visual direction and references — Include: brand visual guidelines, references to creative we like (and why), what to avoid (e.g., generic stock photos), preferred color palette. Reduce designer guessing.
- Specify CTA and landing page — Specify the CTA (e.g., 'Book a demo', 'Download the playbook') and the exact landing page URL. The landing page must match the ad — mismatched ad-to-landing kills conversion.
- Set deadline and review process — Specify: when first drafts are due, who reviews, how many revision rounds. Round 1 typically gets 60% of the way; rounds 2-3 polish. Avoid endless revision spirals.
If it goes wrong
Designer asks lots of clarifying questions
Brief was too vague. Tighten step 2-4 next time. Clarification questions are a brief audit.
Ad performance underwhelms despite tight brief
Test the message with the audience first. Sometimes the brief is right but the message doesn't resonate. Audience research feeds creative.
Endless revision rounds
Cap at 3 rounds. Round 1: structural feedback. Round 2: polish. Round 3: minor tweaks. Beyond that, decide and ship.
