Weekly Social Content Calendar
7 drafted posts in content calendar with copy, visual spec, channel, and scheduled time. Analytics summary from prior week (1 paragraph). Visual briefs for design team (if applicable). Calendar shared with marketing lead. Posts scheduled in publishing tool (confirm green status on all).
Before you start
- Brand voice guide and approved content pillars defined
- Product update log or changelog available for the week
- Approved channels with posting frequency targets (LinkedIn, X, Instagram, etc.)
- Product updates, launches, or milestones from the past week (from changelog or team)
- Performance data from prior week's posts (impressions, engagement rate, top post)
- Any campaign themes, seasonal events, or promotions active this week
The steps
- Review last week's performance — Pull last week's impressions, engagements, engagement rate, clicks and follower delta. Note the best post to repeat, the worst to avoid, and anything that drove signups. Carry the winning format into this week's mix.
- Collect raw material from product and team — Mine the changelog, the product channel and standup for what shipped, customer wins, metrics and behind-the-scenes moments. Small things count — a three-second load time fixed is a post. Collect 10-15 raw bullets and do not polish them yet.
- Map raw material to content pillars — Match each item to a content pillar and drop anything that fits none — it will read as off-brand. Aim for seven posts distributed the way the channel strategy says, for example three education, two proof, one culture, one insight.
- Draft 7 post copies — One post a day: a hook that stands alone on line one, since feeds truncate there, two to four lines of body, then the closer. LinkedIn up to 1,300 characters with links in the comments. X under 280 or a thread. Instagram caption to 300 with hashtags in the first comment. Mark which need a visual.
- Specify visual requirements for each post — For each post needing art, brief it: format, what it shows, any overlay copy word for word, and brand colour and font. For screenshots, name the screen, the state, and anything to mask. Attach the brief to the calendar entry.
- Schedule posts in publishing tool — Schedule per channel: LinkedIn Monday to Thursday, 8-10am or noon; X is flexible but skip weekends for B2B; Instagram Tuesday to Friday morning. Stagger channels so the same hour is never hit three times. Check the tool is still authorised before saving.
- Publish calendar and notify team — Publish the calendar with copy, visual, channel and time. Send the lead two lines: the week, the format that worked best, and anything you need from them with a deadline. Set a midweek reminder to check Monday to Wednesday and adjust.
If it goes wrong
Posts go up but no engagement — content feels generic
Audit pillars: if last 4 weeks are all product-education posts, engagement drops are expected. Inject social proof (customer quotes with specific outcomes) and behind-the-scenes content. Generic product posts rarely outperform human-interest or proof content on social.
Scheduling tool fails to post — silent failure
Check publishing tool dashboard every morning at 9am. Set up posting failure notifications if the tool supports it. Have a backup manual posting checklist for the week's first post until reliability is confirmed.
Design team can't turn around visuals in time
Submit visual briefs by Friday for the following week's calendar. Do not finalize the schedule until visuals are in-hand or confirmed. Have 2-3 evergreen text-only posts as backups for any week a visual falls through.
