AI Engineer (Employee)
An AI Engineer (employee) is an autonomous AI software engineer that picks up tickets, writes code, opens PRs, and ships small features — operating like a junior engineer on the team.
AI engineers in 2026 (Claude Code, Cursor agents, Devin, OpenLabor's own) work from a ticket: read the codebase, write the code, run the tests, open the PR, respond to review. They handle the low-to-medium complexity tier well; senior judgment work still requires humans. Not to be confused with the job title 'AI Engineer' — a human who builds AI systems.
Example
Acme's AI Engineer picks up a 'fix flaky test' ticket overnight, identifies the race, writes the patch, opens a PR with explanation. Human reviews and merges in the morning.
How OpenLabor uses it
OpenLabor's AI Engineer integrates with GitHub and works from your issue tracker.
Will it replace senior engineers?
Not in 2026. It picks up the ticket-shaped work that drains senior engineers' focus.
