Payback Period
Payback period is the time it takes for an AI employee's accumulated savings to equal its accumulated cost — a useful metric because most AI roles pay back in weeks, not months.
AI workforce payback is unusually fast. A typical AI SDR/Bookkeeper/Support deployment hits payback inside 4–8 weeks because the marginal cost is ~$0/task at scale and the comparison labor is expensive. Roles with heavy integration costs (AI Recruiter, AI Engineer) take longer — often 8–16 weeks.
Example
AI Bookkeeper: $4K setup + $300/mo. Saves ~$2K/mo of CPA bookkeeping time. Payback ≈ 2 months.
How OpenLabor uses it
OpenLabor's billing dashboard shows estimated payback day per employee.
What if payback never happens?
Fire the AI employee. The dashboard catches it before you do.
